Presidency Holds Solemn Wreath-Laying Ceremony to Honor Victims of Ashanti Helicopter Crash

The Presidency on Thursday, August 7, 2025, held a deeply moving wreath-laying ceremony at the Ceremonial Gardens of Jubilee House in memory of the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a three-day national mourning period, announced by the government to honor the lives and service of the deceased, which include two senior cabinet ministers, top military officers, and senior party officials.

President John Dramani Mahama, accompanied by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and members of the Council of State, led government officials, bereaved families, military personnel, and members of the general public in laying wreaths to pay tribute to the fallen.

In a solemn atmosphere filled with grief and national reflection, the symbolic ceremony served as a public expression of Ghana’s collective sorrow and gratitude for the sacrifices made by the deceased.

The deceased were:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation and MP for Tamale Central
  • Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the NDC
  • Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Ghana Air Force
  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, Ghana Air Force
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Ghana Air Force

The national mourning continues through Saturday, August 9, culminating in an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” at the Forecourt of the State House, where dignitaries and citizens alike are expected to gather in remembrance.

According to a statement from Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, details of the state funeral and burial arrangements will be communicated in the coming days.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the nation and is being described as one of Ghana’s darkest moments in recent memory, prompting flags to be flown at half-mast and calls for national unity in grief and reflection.

President Mahama is expected to address the nation in the coming days as Ghana mourns the loss of some of its finest public servants and military personnel.
