The Chairperson of the Safety and Security Committee at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), DCOP Lydia Donkor, has refuted claims that Asante Kotoko fan Nana Pooley was stabbed inside the stadium during last weekend’s tragic incident.
The passionate fan lost his life following the Porcupine Warriors’ 2-1 defeat to Nsoatreman at the Nana Koromansah II Stadium on matchday 19 of the Ghana Premier League. While initial eyewitness accounts suggested that he was stabbed at the stadium, DCOP Donkor has clarified that the incident occurred outside the venue.
“This unfortunate incident [the fan’s stabbing] didn’t happen inside the stadium. It happened outside, and he was picked up by a tricycle and dropped at that section of the stadium,” she revealed on JoySports Link on Saturday, February 8.

DCOP Donkor also addressed concerns over security measures at the stadium, emphasising that a strict search regime is enforced at entry points to prevent the possession of weapons.
“I have to clarify this because there are all kinds of comments about how the police allowed someone to enter the stadium with a knife. Let me emphasise that the police have a strict search regime.
“At least, that is something I discuss with my various commanders, and we insist on it. When you’re coming into the stadium, we search everybody entering,” she stated.
She further urged football clubs and individuals to report any threats to law enforcement agencies, stating that the police were not made aware of any prior dangers concerning Nana Pooley’s safety.
“The best advice I can give now is that if he had any genuine concerns [about threats to his life], he could have approached the police or informed someone in the area so that the police would be aware,” she continued.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing, with the Ghana Police Service having arrested six individuals so far in connection with the stabbing. Among them, former Sunyani West MP Ignatius Baffour Awuah and another suspect have been granted bail as authorities continue their probe.
The tragic incident has reignited conversations about security at football matches in Ghana, with calls for stricter measures to ensure the safety of fans and stakeholders at league venues.
