Political Scientist Rates Akufo-Addo’s Performance as “Below Zero”

Dr. Amakye-Boateng, a political scientist and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has delivered a scathing assessment of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership, describing his tenure as “below zero.”

The professor’s remarks came just ahead of the president’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 3, 2025.

Speaking on the Joy News AM Show with Sweety Aboache, Dr. Amakye-Boateng criticised Akufo-Addo for what he called a “failure” across various sectors.

The academic lamented that the administration had failed to address key challenges facing the nation, such as unemployment, high living costs, and illegal mining (galamsey).

“Seriously, it’s very difficult to assess this government. Almost everything was a failure, including the Free SHS program. They didn’t mean it, which is why the graduates didn’t vote for Dr. Bawumia. How can you rate this government? It’s below zero,” Dr. Amakye-Boateng said.

Dr. Amakye-Boateng highlighted the Free Senior High School (SHS) program as one of the key failures of the administration, claiming that its implementation was insincere.

He pointed to the apparent lack of support from Free SHS graduates, who, according to him, did not back the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the December 2024 elections.

On the issue of galamsey, Dr. Amakye-Boateng sharply criticised the government’s inaction in curbing illegal mining. “Why did we allow galamsey to reach the level it has? How could we do this to ourselves? Our forefathers, many years ago, had reasons to preserve the forests, yet today, those of us who consider ourselves enlightened are doing this,” he stated, adding that the failure to address this critical environmental issue was a major blemish on the administration’s record.

Dr. Amakye-Boateng expressed disappointment over President Akufo-Addo’s speeches, stating that while the president had delivered numerous addresses throughout his presidency, none had convinced the public that he had the solutions to Ghana’s problems.

The lecturer also emphasised that despite Akufo-Addo’s efforts to present a vision for a better Ghana, the actual outcomes of his policies and programs were far from what had been promised.
