Police Officer Drowns in River Offin During Anti-Galamsey Operation in Assin Asaman

A police officer identified as Constable Kwabena Dogbe tragically drowned this morning in the River Offin while participating in an anti-galamsey operation led by the Central North Regional Police Command.

The operation, aimed at curbing illegal mining activities in the region, was launched as part of ongoing efforts to combat the environmental devastation caused by galamsey. Upon arrival at the illegal mining site, the police team encountered a group of miners who, upon spotting the officers, abandoned their equipment and fled across the river.

Determined to seize and destroy the illegal mining tools, including changfang machines and water pumping devices, Constable Dogbe entered the river to pursue the fleeing suspects. In a tragic turn of events, he slipped and was swept away by the fast-moving current.

A frantic search lasting over four hours was conducted, and officers eventually recovered Constable Dogbe’s lifeless body from the river. The incident has sent shockwaves through the police service and the Assin Asaman community, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement in the fight against illegal mining.

The Central North Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the public of its continued resolve to clamp down on illegal mining.

The death of Constable Dogbe underscores the grave risks associated with the government’s crackdown on galamsey. Illegal mining remains a persistent threat to Ghana’s environment, contaminating rivers and degrading farmlands.
