PNC Petitions Otumfuo Over Chief Justice’s Suspension, Accuses Mahama of Political Witch Hunt

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has petitioned the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene in what the party describes as a politically motivated plot by President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remove suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, from office.

Speaking after the submission of the petition at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, PNC National Chairperson Janet Nabila accused the Mahama administration of orchestrating a “vindictive and abusive” agenda aimed at silencing perceived opponents and consolidating control over all three arms of government.

“We have come to Manhyia to present a petition to him because of what is happening with the suspended Chief Justice’s issue. We’re women, and a particular party comes, and we realise that a particular party is targeting women and using all means that are abusive in nature to get what they want — it becomes so worrying,” Nabila said.

With visible emotion, she added:

“I wept when I heard the Chief Justice come out to register her displeasure to the entire country about the ordeal she’s going through.”

Nabila condemned the current process as not only a personal attack on Justice Torkornoo but also an affront to women and the rule of law.

“The process is an abuse of the Chief Justice and women of Ghana. Whatever they are doing to the woman is an abuse of power. Since all protocols are no longer working, our justice system becomes an extension of the political party.”

In a pointed rebuke of the ongoing National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, she questioned the moral standing of those leading the nation in prayer:

“How do you celebrate National Thanksgiving when you are wicked and vindictive? When your modus operandi is to punish your enemies. They should be celebrating a National Day of Repentance.”

The PNC leader appealed to Otumfuo as the custodian of traditional authority and moral justice to use his influence to restore balance and fairness to the process.

“We came to the Manhyia Palace since the traditional authorities were there before democracy. When constitutional channels are abused, it is only fitting that we appeal to our chiefs for justice.”

Janet Nabila also rejected suggestions that her stance was politically biased, particularly in comparison to her silence during the 2018 removal of former Electoral Commission Chair, Charlotte Osei.

“This isn’t about bias. Every injustice is wrong, but two wrongs don’t make a right. Justice must be blind, and so must our defence of it.”
