Peace Ceremony Turns Violent: 5 Severely Injured, Several Others Hurt in Bawku Schools Clash

A peace ceremony meant to reconcile students of Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute descended into violence on Tuesday, February 25, leaving at least five students with severe injuries and several others with minor wounds.

The event, held in the Kpalwega suburb of Bawku, was spearheaded by traditional leaders to end ongoing hostilities between the two schools. It began peacefully but soon turned chaotic when tensions flared among the students.

As part of the reconciliation efforts, traditional leaders introduced a symbolic ritual—the burial of the okra stick—to signify an end to conflicts and usher in lasting peace. However, the moment of unity was short-lived, as students from both schools suddenly began hurling stones at each other, forcing some to flee for safety while others sustained injuries.

The Bawku Divisional Police Command swiftly intervened to restore order, while the injured students were transported to Quality and Vineyard hospitals for medical attention.

Despite the disruption, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) remained resolute in completing the peace ritual. With the involvement of the senior prefects from both institutions, the symbolic burial of the okra stick was successfully carried out, offering a glimmer of hope for reconciliation between the rival schools.
