Parliamentary Vetting Chaos: Offenders to Lose Their Seats—Ad-Hoc Committee Chair

The Chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the January 30th chaos that marred ministerial vetting in Parliament, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has announced that severe sanctions, including possible expulsion from the House, await individuals found guilty of misconduct.

Speaking on 3FM’s Morning Show with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on April 3, the Ho West MP confirmed that the committee’s report is complete and will be laid before Parliament as soon as the House resumes from recess.

“Our report is ready, and as soon as we return from recess, we will lay it before the House. We won’t hide it from the good people of Ghana, so they should wait patiently for it. Various degrees of sanctions will be meted out, including expulsion from the chamber,” Mr Bedzrah stated.

He expressed disappointment over the physical altercations and heckling that unfolded on January 30th, stressing that such incidents tarnish the image of Parliament and undermine public confidence.

“Parliament is degenerating into a dishonourable House because such actions not only bring the chamber into disrepute but also erode public confidence in the institution’s ability to conduct its affairs with integrity and professionalism,” he lamented.

Mr Bedzrah dismissed allegations by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin that the committee’s work unfairly targeted the Minority Caucus.

“Let me put on record that it was not part of our job to target or witch-hunt anyone. Our work was to hear from all parties involved and look for evidence of any Member of Parliament who may have flouted the rules of engagement. That is not witch-hunting; that is democracy,” he emphasised.

The vetting, which was intended for President Mahama’s ministerial appointees, descended into chaos as minority and majority members clashed over the timing of the exercise.

In response, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin established a seven-member committee to investigate the incident and announced the suspension of four MPs: Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib for two weeks.
