Parliament Tightens Security to Block Suspended MPs

In a move to maintain order and discipline, security measures have been strengthened at the entrance to Parliament, with a new perimeter in place designed to prevent suspended Members of Parliament (MPs) from gaining access to the chamber.

The move comes ahead of Tuesday’s parliamentary proceedings and is aimed at ensuring the smooth continuation of parliamentary activities.

According to JoyNews’ parliamentary correspondent, Kwaku Asante, the heightened security will also restrict non-MPs from entering the chamber during the session.

This decision has been put in place as the House prepares to deliberate on several key issues, including the approval of ministerial nominees who were recently vetted by the Appointments Committee.

The MPs in question were suspended by the Speaker of Parliament for a period of two weeks following their involvement in disruptive events that occurred during the proceedings of the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 31.

The chaos, which interrupted the vetting process, led to their suspension as part of efforts to uphold the decorum and functioning of Parliament.

The move to strengthen security comes as Parliament seeks to maintain order during a crucial period when ministerial nominations are under consideration. It is expected that the new security measures will be strictly enforced, ensuring that suspended MPs and any unauthorised individuals are prevented from interfering with parliamentary proceedings.

As the House prepares for what promises to be an intense session, the decision to increase security reflects Parliament’s commitment to protecting the integrity of its operations and fostering a more orderly environment.
