The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has raised concerns over the increasing number of illegal billboards across the country, revealing that more than 60% of them have been erected without approval and with unknown ownership.
According to the association, many of these billboards have been placed in unsafe locations, including pedestrian walkways, highway medians, and intersections, posing serious risks to public safety.
Speaking to Citi News, AAG President Andrews Ackah described the situation as alarming, stating that a lack of regulation and enforcement has led to a chaotic advertising environment.

“Our investigations show that we cannot trace the owners of about 50-60% of billboards in Ghana. These structures were mounted without following due process, creating challenges in monitoring and ensuring public safety,” he explained.
Ackah also highlighted how political influences contribute to the problem, especially during election seasons when billboards are erected indiscriminately without proper approvals.
He warned that failure to regulate the industry could lead to accidents and further urban disorder.
The AAG is calling on authorities to enforce billboard regulations and remove illegal structures to ensure public safety and restore order in the advertising sector.
