Over 11,400 Persons Living with HIV in Bono Region, Majority Are Women

Recent statistics from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) indicate that as of September 2024, a total of 11,401 Persons Living with HIV and AIDS (PLwHAs) have been recorded in the Bono Region.

Of this figure, 8,481 are females, while 2,727 are males, highlighting a significant gender disparity in HIV prevalence.

Mr. Emmanuel Obeng-Hinneh, the Bono Regional HIV Coordinator of the GHS, disclosed these figures while assuring that all PLwHAs in the region were currently on treatment.

He was speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Sunyani, organised by the Bono Regional Office of the Technical Support Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) in collaboration with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council.

The meeting aimed to identify gaps and opportunities to strengthen the regional HIV response, providing a common platform for stakeholders to discuss challenges and strategise on improving HIV prevention, treatment, and care.

Mr. Obeng-Hinneh also provided insights into the viral load (VL) testing trend among HIV patients. Out of 9,791 clients eligible for the test, 8,177 samples had been taken, with 6,270 tests conducted. He reported a VL testing coverage of 64 percent and an 88 percent VL suppression rate.

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator of the GAC, urged stakeholders to continue supporting the Commission’s efforts to curb the spread of HIV.

He reiterated the GAC’s commitment to assisting NGOs in carrying out preventive programs and initiatives to reduce the prevalence of the disease.
