Outraged Bawku Youth Set Police Commander’s Residence Ablaze

Tensions in Bawku reached a boiling point on Wednesday morning after irate youth from the Kusasi faction set fire to a police vehicle and the private residence of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Adamu Seidu, following the killing of a civilian during a police operation.

According to local reports, violence broke out when the Kusasi youth attempted to block members of the Mamprusi faction from entering the main market centre. Police officers deployed to quell the disturbance opened fire in an effort to disperse the crowd, killing one person and injuring two others.

The shooting sparked immediate outrage. In retaliation, the angry youth stormed the Manga area—where the Divisional Police Commander’s private residence is located—and set it ablaze. They also torched a police vehicle in the Bawku township, further escalating the already volatile situation.

Eyewitnesses say the unrest has plunged parts of the town into panic, with many residents fleeing their homes in search of safety.

Security in the area has been stretched thin, as tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi factions remain fragile. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but additional security reinforcements are expected to be deployed to prevent further violence.

The latest development underscores the deep-seated ethnic tensions in Bawku, a town that has experienced recurring clashes despite multiple peace efforts over the years.
