Only Two Landfills Serve Greater Accra, Says Landfills Company MD

Managing Director of the Landfills Company Limited, Dr Peter Kwesi Dagadu, has disclosed that the Greater Accra Region currently relies on only two major landfill sites to dispose of the enormous volumes of waste generated daily, a situation he says poses a significant challenge to effective waste management.

According to him, the limited number of disposal facilities has placed immense pressure on the region’s waste management system, making it increasingly difficult to keep pace with the growing population and the corresponding rise in waste generation.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, July 7, on the worsening waste situation in Accra, Dr Dagadu explained that the scarcity of landfill sites remains one of the biggest obstacles to maintaining a clean and sustainable capital city.

Highlighting the existing disposal infrastructure, Dr Dagadu said one of the facilities is located within the Greater Accra Region, while the other is situated in the neighbouring Eastern Region but also serves the capital.

“Within the footprint of the Greater Accra Region, we have the Kpone dumpsite, but just outside in the Eastern Region, we have the Adepa landfill site, which also serves the Greater Accra Region, and so essentially, there are two major disposal sites servicing the entire Greater Accra Region.”

Dr Dagadu also disclosed that the Kpone landfill, one of the region’s principal waste disposal sites, has reached the end of its operational lifespan and is expected to cease operations within the next six months.

“For the Kpone landfill site, it is in its twilight period where it is full and exhausted, and within the next six months, it should be shut down, but the Adepa dumpsite is a 120-acre facility that can process and absorb up to 4,000 tonnes of waste a day.”
