One arrested in Council of State election re-run in Ashanti region

A tense standoff between the police and supporters of a candidate in the Ashanti Region’s Council of State election re-run has resulted in one arrest.

The detained individual, reportedly a supporter of former NDC Chairman Yaw Obimpeh, was apprehended after ignoring police instructions to stay behind designated barricades at the venue.

Today’s election is a re-run of last week’s vote, which was halted following a violent attack by a group of thugs on Electoral Commission (EC) officials.

The attackers destroyed vital election materials, including cast ballots, leading to the suspension of the election.

In response, security measures have been tightened for the re-run. Vehicles are now banned from entering the venue, and six police-controlled barricades have been set up along streets leading to the Prempeh Assembly Hall. Traffic in the area has also been blocked.

To maintain order, hundreds of police officers have been deployed, supported by crowd control equipment, to ensure the election proceeds smoothly and without further incidents. Authorities are on high alert as they oversee the process.
