Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has been released following his controversial arrest by security operatives, which triggered nationwide condemnation from opposition leaders and press freedom advocates.
The host of For the Records was taken into custody on Wednesday, March 19, under unclear circumstances, prompting the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to denounce the move as an attack on democracy and free speech.
NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua condemned the arrest, describing it as a direct threat to press freedom and calling for Mensah’s immediate release.

Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin also criticised the development, warning against the growing use of state security to suppress dissent.
Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has visited former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Ernest Addison following a dramatic raid on his residence by National Security operatives. Reports indicate that heavily armed officers stormed Addison’s Roman Ridge home, disabled CCTV cameras, and conducted a thorough search, allegedly in pursuit of hidden vaults.
The twin incidents have raised concerns about political intolerance and the shrinking space for free expression in Ghana.
