The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addae Odike, has dismissed the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) ability to end illegal mining (galamsey), arguing that the party—like the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)—lacks the political will to tackle the issue.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Odike claimed both parties are more focused on political gains than genuine solutions.
“NDC cannot stop galamsey. Their goal is to score political points against the previous NPP government while benefiting from the same illegal mining. Our problem in Ghana is repetitive—NPP and NDC have realised that Ghanaians complain but still vote for them,” he stated.

Odike warned of severe environmental repercussions, blaming poor governance for the continued destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and forests.
He insisted that a total ban on surface mining was the only way to curb the menace.
“If we don’t stop this, there will come a time when we won’t have clean water to drink. We must ban all forms of surface mining and audit every mining license, including those given to multinational companies,” he emphasised.
He further urged the government to reclaim and restore degraded lands, using them for agriculture to benefit the nation.
“We need bold leadership to stop galamsey once and for all. The future of our environment and our people depends on it,” Odike concluded.
