NYA to Renovate Azumah Nelson Sports Complex

The National Youth Authority (NYA) has raised concerns over the deteriorating state of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, calling for immediate renovation to restore the facility for youth development.

This follows a recent inspection of the complex by the NYA’s Acting CEO, Osman Ayariga, and the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment.

The visit aimed to assess the current state of the facility and explore avenues for its rehabilitation.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi News, Ayariga lamented the current condition of the sports complex, describing it as unsafe and abandoned.

“Azumah Nelson Sports Complex is in a dilapidated state. It has become a breeding ground for very dangerous reptiles and animals. President John Dramani Mahama has said that he would want to make sure the youth of this country can develop and sharpen their talent,” he stated.

He emphasised that revamping the facility would create opportunities for young athletes to nurture their skills and contribute to the nation’s sporting excellence.

Ayariga attributed the facility’s decay to poor leadership and the failure of successive governments to complete projects initiated by their predecessors.

“The issue had to do with management at a point, and people decided to abandon it. This has to do with leadership crises. When you are handed over power, whether you like it or not, you must complete projects of the previous government; you do not have to let it rot just because you want to build a new one to have your name on it,” he criticised.

The NYA’s acting CEO urged political leaders to put national development above personal recognition and prioritise the completion of abandoned projects.

“Politicians should desist from the practice whereby if something was started by my predecessor, I do not want to complete it because it is not my name that will be on it. Whoever started it is immaterial. The most important thing is facilities are built to the benefit of the people of Ghana,” he urged.

The NYA has pledged to work closely with the Youth Ministry to expedite the renovation of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, ensuring that young people across the country have access to proper sporting infrastructure to develop their talents.
