NPP’s defeat is surprising- Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has expressed his shock over the party’s unexpected loss in the 2024 general elections.

Despite what he described as significant economic recovery under the NPP government, the party suffered a landslide defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in both presidential and parliamentary races.

In an interview on GHOne TV’s Hard Talk with Lily Mohammed, Mr. Blay admitted that the outcome of the election caught him off guard.

He emphasised the achievements of the Akufo-Addo administration, particularly in handling the economy and ensuring stability, which he believed should have secured the NPP’s stay in power.

“Of course, it [the NPP defeat] is surprising,” Mr. Blay remarked. “I would say the NPP, under Nana Akufo-Addo, did very well in handling the economy, good governance, and establishing peace in the country despite severe challenges.”

He explained that the government inherited a struggling economy and worked diligently to achieve significant progress. According to Mr. Blay, these efforts gave the party confidence heading into the elections.

“We were coming out of a difficult economic period with a low GDP. In spite of all these challenges, Akufo-Addo’s government, and therefore the NPP, was doing well for this country. We were convinced that the election would turn out in our favor. Unfortunately, what we did not expect happened,” he said.

The defeat has sparked widespread introspection within the NPP, with many attributing the loss to governance missteps and voter dissatisfaction. However, Mr. Blay stood by the administration’s track record, emphasising its focus on national development and stability.
