The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a firm rejection of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, calling the move “unjustified” and “without consensus”.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News following the EC’s July 2 press release, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, denied that the party had agreed to the rerun.
“Our representatives were at the meeting, and I have to put it on record that there was no such agreement with the EC,” Mohammed stated.
“That is very evident in the release of the EC itself—that the political parties did not agree.”

The Electoral Commission had cited the lack of presiding officer verification on scanned pink sheets as the reason for calling the rerun. These documents were used to collate results after the original sheets were destroyed in a violent disruption at the constituency’s collation centre in December 2024.
However, the NPP insists that only three polling station results remain outstanding, and the EC should have completed collation based on previously accepted results.
“We don’t know what the EC is up to. The NPP is not going to give up on this particular fight,” Mohammed added.
“We don’t know of any elections. The EC must conclude the collation on the three polling stations—this is still outstanding, and that is clear for us.”
The NPP further argued that instead of calling voters back to the polls, the Commission should provide adequate security to protect and conclude the collation process based on results already accepted by party agents and available documentation.
The Electoral Commission, however, maintains that the lack of formal verification from presiding officers for the 19 polling stations necessitated the rerun. It confirmed that verification had since been secured for 18 of the other 37 originally disputed polling stations, negating the need to rerun those.
The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, and the EC has assured the public of a transparent, peaceful process, with the Ghana Police Service providing security at all affected polling centres.
The party is expected to escalate its pushback with a press conference at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, to be addressed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who will outline the party’s official stance and next steps.
The Ablekuma North election remains one of the last undecided parliamentary contests from the December 2024 general elections, and the outcome could shape the final balance of power in Ghana’s 276-seat Parliament.
