NPP gov’t “criminally mishandled” Ghana’s economy – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a scathing attack on the previous administration under Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing it of gross mismanagement and reckless handling of Ghana’s economy.

Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Mahama did not mince words, describing the country’s current economic state as the result of “criminal mishandling.”

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene,” he declared.

Expressing his frustration over what he called reckless governance, he questioned how the previous administration could have been so irresponsible with the country’s resources.

“How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand,” he added.

The president made these remarks during a session where the government officially announced a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers, effective January 2025.

The move, following recent negotiations with labour unions, is aimed at cushioning workers against economic hardships. It marks the second wage adjustment in under a year, following a 23% increase in 2024.

As Ghana continues to grapple with economic challenges, Mahama’s remarks set the stage for what could be an intensified debate over the country’s economic trajectory and governance policies.
