No Teacher Was Recruited Without Clearance; Minister’s Claim Is False—Former GES Director Fires Back

In a sharp rebuttal to what he describes as a “false and misleading” claim, former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah, has categorically denied assertions by the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, that 39,000 appointment letters were issued in 2024 without financial clearance.

Responding to a viral video in which the Education Minister made the explosive allegation, Dr. Nkansah released a detailed press statement exposing the facts and defending the integrity of the teacher recruitment process under his leadership.

“Let me put it on record — every single teacher recruited in 2024 was backed by formal financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance,” Dr. Eric Nkansah asserted.

Dr. Nkansah outlined a comprehensive breakdown of the recruitment data:

  • On May 10, 2024, the Ministry of Finance granted clearance to recruit 16,500 graduate teachers.
  • A second clearance for 2,000 more recruits followed on July 26, 2024.
  • On October 10, 2024, an amendment allowed 2,000 of the slots to be reallocated for diploma teachers.

Recruitment Breakdown:

  • Graduate Teacher Slots (16,500):
    • 12,784 from Colleges of Education
    • 2,629 limited university graduates
    • 920 used to clear backlogs from the previous year
    • Total used: 16,333
    • Balance: 167
  • Diploma Teacher Slots (2,000):
    • 1,387 recruited
    • Balance: 613

➡️ Total Cleared in 2024: 18,500
➡️ Total Recruited: 17,720
➡️ Unused Clearance: 780

“There is absolutely no basis for the claim that 39,000 appointments were made without financial backing. The numbers simply don’t lie,” he fired back.

Dr. Nkansah urged government officials to “exercise responsibility and due diligence” before making public pronouncements that could mislead the public or cast doubt on the credibility of institutions.

“Education is too critical to be tainted with political misrepresentation,” he warned.
