“No Pardons Granted” – President Refutes Media Reports on Presidential Pardon

The Office of the President has categorically denied reports claiming that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted a presidential pardon to 11 individuals.

In a statement issued on January 6, 2025, Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency, described the reports as inaccurate, emphasising that President Akufo-Addo has not exercised his prerogative of mercy in relation to the individuals mentioned.

“We wish to categorically state that these assertions are inaccurate, and no pardon has been granted by President Akufo-Addo,” the statement read.

Earlier media reports suggested that individuals allegedly pardoned included William Ato Essien, convicted in connection with the collapse of Capital Bank. Essien, who is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence after defaulting on a GHS90 million fine, is said to suffer from serious health issues.

Other names cited in the reports included Philip Akpeena Assibit, convicted in 2018 for causing financial loss to the State, and Akwasi Alhassan, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence since 1993.

The Office of the President firmly refuted these claims, stressing that no such pardons have been issued. The statement also urged the public to disregard the misinformation and to rely solely on official communications from the presidency.

“The public is advised to ignore any contrary information and rely only on official statements from the Office of the President,” the statement concluded.
