No More Removing Laptops, Liquids, Shoes or Belts During Security Screening at Accra Airport

New security equipment that allows passengers to keep laptops and liquids in their cabin baggage during security screening in addition to the wearing of shoes and belts has been installed at terminals 2 and 3 of the Accra International Airport.

In a public notice issued on July 11, 2026, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) explained that the installation of the new and advanced equipment means passengers would no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during screening.

Shoes and belts may also remain on, except where security profiling requires additional checks.

Liquids, aerosols and gels may also remain in carry-on baggage during screening, although the existing limit of 100 millilitres per container remains in force.

The GACL said the new equipment includes an automatic tray return system, which returns trays to passengers after screening to speed up the repacking process.

The new system would be introduced in phases and would operate alongside the existing screening equipment during the transition period, the GACL said.

The installation is part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger processing and aviation security at the airport.

In August 2025, the GACL introduced an Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record system to enable security agencies to screen passenger information before arrival and departure.

What this means for passengers:

Air Travel

  1. No need to remove laptops
Laptops and other large electronic devices can now remain in your cabin baggage during screening.

  2. Keep your shoes and belts on.
Unless otherwise required during security profiling, passengers may proceed through screening with footwear and belts on.

  3. Liquids, aerosols and gels can remain in your bag.
Passengers can now keep Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) in their cabin baggage during screening, as separate screening of LAGs may not be required.

Kindly note that security regulations still prohibit LAGs that exceed 100ml in volume per container.

    Luggage

  4. Faster processing
A new automatic tray return system will quickly return trays to passengers for repacking of divested items.
Migration onto the new system will be done progressively or in phases and alongside the existing procedures and equipment.
