The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system across the United States, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mexico, as part of a broader effort to ease passport renewal for Nigerians abroad.
The rollout was confirmed in a statement posted on Sunday by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr Akinsola Akinlabi, via the Service’s official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account. The new contactless system went live in the U.S. on April 11, followed by Jamaica on April 14, with Mexico and Brazil also launching on April 14, 2025.
“This move is part of the service’s ongoing commitment to deliver innovative and efficient services to Nigerians globally,” Akinlabi said.

The upgraded process allows Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting a passport centre for biometric enrolment. Instead, applicants can complete the process using the NIS Mobile App, available on the Google Play Store. An iOS version is expected soon.
The app enables secure digital identity verification and submission of passport renewal applications from anywhere with internet access.
The NIS says an enhanced version of the app is being developed for both Android and iOS platforms to further improve user experience and accessibility.
The contactless passport system is now available in:
- Canada (since November 5, 2024)
- United Kingdom and Ireland (February 7, 2025)
- United States (April 11, 2025)
- Jamaica, Brazil, and Mexico (April 14, 2025)
- Parts of Europe and Asia
Still pending rollout are Australia and Nigeria, with dates to be announced.
The NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nandap, emphasised that the initiative is designed to ease the burden of passport acquisition and renewal for Nigerians living overseas.
“This digital solution ensures better access to travel documentation and enhances service delivery to our diaspora community,” Nandap noted.
The contactless system removes the need for physical appointments, cuts down waiting times, and ensures secure, efficient, and convenient processing of travel documents. It’s also part of the NIS’s broader plan to leverage technology in streamlining its global operations.
