Newborn Twin Dies at Koforidua Hospital Amid Nurses’ Strike

A tragic incident at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua has heightened public concern over the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) after a newborn twin died less than 24 hours after delivery.

The heartbreaking event occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 9, shortly after both babies were transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and placed in an incubator. According to hospital sources, one of the twins reportedly died due to a delay in receiving critical medical attention.

Though the official cause of death is yet to be confirmed, insiders say the healthcare worker assigned to the NICU arrived late—raising serious questions about staffing levels and patient care amid the strike.

Distraught mothers at the facility have blamed the industrial action for the loss, expressing fear and frustration over the lack of medical personnel.

“No nurse was available, and the one who came in to assist arrived late, resulting in the death of the twin,” one mother told Citi News. “We’re suffering due to the strike—there are no nurses available. We’re pleading with the government to consider the nurses’ demand because the babies are dying.”

Another mother added, “The government should come to a compromise with the nurses. If their demands are ignored, our babies will continue to die. We’re really scared.”

The GRNMA initiated the strike after rejecting a government proposal to postpone the implementation of their revised conditions of service to 2026. Talks between the Ministry of Health, GRNMA leadership, and key stakeholders continued behind closed doors on Monday but ended without resolution.

Meanwhile, the death of the newborn has intensified calls for a swift resolution, as fears grow about the strike’s impact on vulnerable patients—especially newborns and mothers—in hospitals nationwide.
