The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to unveil its new parliamentary leadership on Thursday, January 23, following recent ministerial appointments that necessitated changes in the party’s front bench.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Majority Leader and Finance Minister-designate, disclosed the planned announcement during a parliamentary session, responding to criticism over delays in naming the new leadership.
The reshuffle will see Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, take over as Majority Leader. Supporting him will be Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South, who has been named Deputy Majority Leader.
Additionally, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, will assume the position of Majority Chief Whip, replacing Kwame Agbodza.
These changes come after four key members of the NDC’s current leadership team were appointed as ministers in President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, prompting the party to reconfigure its parliamentary front bench.
Dr. Ato Forson addressed concerns raised by Matthew Nyindam, MP for Kpandai, who criticised the NDC for delays in resolving the leadership transition. Nyindam argued that the delays created uncertainty in parliamentary proceedings.
“I remain the leader of the NDC Majority Caucus, as I have not yet been sworn in as the finance minister. However, I can confirm that the NDC will officially announce its new parliamentary leadership this Thursday,” Ato Forson clarified.
