Nana Akua Afriyie Rules Out Rerun of Ablekuma North Election

Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has firmly rejected any possibility of a rerun in the constituency’s parliamentary election.

According to her, all necessary documents are intact, rendering calls for a rerun unwarranted.

Disputes over the collation of results have delayed the declaration of a winner in the Ablekuma North parliamentary race.

A High Court order issued on January 4, 2025, directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation process and announce the results for four outstanding constituencies. While results have been declared for three of these, the situation in Ablekuma North remains unresolved.

The collation process resumed on January 8, 2025, but was halted due to incomplete results from three polling stations. The EC subsequently scheduled the continuation of the collation for January 17, 2025, at 8:00 AM. However, citing security intelligence, the Ghana Police Service recommended a postponement.

In a statement issued on January 17, the EC revealed that the police had not provided enhanced security at the collation centre, leading to an invasion by party supporters and another suspension of the process.

Addressing the situation in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, February 6, Afriyie expressed her firm stance against a rerun, arguing that all necessary documentation exists to complete the collation.

“The three polling stations—we have the pink sheets. We have the original pink sheets, and we have the scanned copies. So why the rerun?” Afriyie questioned.

“I don’t agree in any way. We are not going for any rerun. We are going to collate those three polling stations,” she insisted.

With tensions still high, stakeholders now await the EC’s next course of action in resolving the electoral impasse in Ablekuma North.
