Naana Opoku-Agyemang Champions e-Cedi Innovation to Future-Proof Ghana’s Economy

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has announced a bold digital transformation agenda centred on the development and testing of the e-Cedi, Ghana’s digital currency, aimed at modernising the nation’s payment systems and preserving the cedi’s legacy in an increasingly cashless world.

As Ghana celebrates 60 years of its national currency, the cedi, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says the time has come to propel the country’s economy into a new era of financial modernisation — one built on innovation, inclusion, and discipline.

Speaking at the official launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations in Accra, she revealed that the Bank of Ghana is currently developing and testing the e-Cedi, a digital version of the currency that will redefine how Ghanaians transact, save, and do business.

“Finance is evolving rapidly, and that is why the Bank of Ghana is developing and testing the e-Cedi, a digital form of our currency. Once fully scaled, the e-Cedi will modernise our payment systems and ensure that even in a cashless future, the cedi retains its importance,” she said.

The Vice President described the e-Cedi as a key milestone in Ghana’s economic journey — one that connects the country’s historical independence with its digital future. She recalled that in July 1965, under the leadership of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana took a bold step to replace the colonial pound, pence, and shillings with the cedi, symbolising economic freedom and sovereignty.

“The cedi, drawn from the cowry shell, was a statement that our history did not begin with colonisation. Independence meant expressing value and transacting in our own terms,” she stated.

Reflecting on six decades of the cedi’s evolution, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the currency has witnessed Ghana’s triumphs and challenges — from economic crises to recovery — yet has remained a symbol of resilience and national identity.

Citing recent gains, she observed that the cedi’s resurgence on the global stage is proof of Ghana’s renewed fiscal discipline and prudent policy direction.

“According to Bloomberg, the Ghana cedi, once the worst-performing currency in 2022, became the best-performing currency in the world in 2025. Inflation dropped from 54.1% to 13.7%, and our gross international reserves now exceed 12 billion US dollars,” she announced to applause.

She commended the Bank of Ghana, under Governor Dr Johnson Aseam-Akyeamang, and the Ministry of Finance, led by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for their efforts in restoring credibility and stability to the economy through sound monetary management and engagement with the public.

However, the Vice President cautioned that sustaining confidence in the cedi will require consistency, transparency, and fiscal responsibility at all levels.

“Confidence will not sustain itself. Government must lead by example. No more reckless borrowing or deficits that pass today’s problems to tomorrow’s generations,” she warned.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called for collaboration between the public and private sectors, academia, and the media to strengthen financial education and civic awareness about the importance of protecting the cedi’s value.

She also stressed the need for digital inclusion alongside digital innovation, ensuring that fintech progress benefits every Ghanaian, particularly those in rural areas.

“The strength of the cedi lies not only in what it buys but also in what it represents — our faith in ourselves, our institutions, and our future,” she affirmed.

Concluding her remarks, the Vice President paid tribute to Dr Kwame Nkrumah, past governors of the Bank of Ghana, and all Ghanaians who have sustained the currency’s integrity over the decades.

“As we buy, sell, borrow, and save, let us remember that the cedi is a living symbol of our independence and aspiration. May our cedi endure,” she declared before officially launching the Cedi@60 celebration.
