Kasoa, a bustling commercial hub in the Central Region with over 250,000 residents, is grappling with one of the worst water crises in recent years.
Many communities in the area have been without a drop of water for nearly three months, forcing thousands to either trek long distances to find water or rely on costly private water vendors.
This severe shortage is deepening both economic and social hardships for residents.

The water crisis in Kasoa is not a new problem but rather a long-standing issue rooted in an overstretched and outdated water supply system.
The Weija Water Treatment Plant, which serves parts of Kasoa, has struggled to meet the growing demand due to rapid population growth and urban expansion in the area.
Adding to the challenge are poor infrastructure, illegal water connections, and weak enforcement of policies, all of which exacerbate the water shortage and leave residents with an unpredictable supply.
While previous administrations have made attempts to address the water shortage, these efforts have largely fallen short, offering only temporary solutions. As one of the country’s major economic centres, Kasoa’s water infrastructure has not kept up with its growth, resulting in a crisis that disrupts daily life and limits economic opportunities.
In response to the worsening situation, Dr. Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, has taken proactive steps to resolve the water crisis.
In an exclusive interview with Obaatanpa News, Naa Koryoo revealed that she has already engaged with key stakeholders, including Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and other relevant authorities, to craft a comprehensive plan aimed at improving water distribution in Kasoa.
Unlike previous efforts that have failed to bring lasting change, Naa Koryoo’s approach seeks to deliver both immediate relief and long-term solutions.
In the short term, she is exploring the deployment of water tankers to the worst-hit areas to provide residents with access to water while structural reforms are underway.
However, the MP emphasised that addressing Kasoa’s water crisis requires more than just temporary fixes. A holistic strategy is needed, one that includes expanding infrastructure, investing in new pipelines, and strictly regulating illegal water connections to ensure a reliable water supply in the future.
Naa Koryoo’s proactive leadership offers a beacon of hope for Kasoa residents, who have long suffered from the water shortage. However, the success of her plan hinges on collaboration between policymakers, utility providers, and local authorities. With a solid commitment to upgrading the region’s water system, there is potential for lasting change.
Residents of Kasoa are hopeful that these efforts will bring the long-awaited solution to their water crisis, ensuring access to clean and reliable water for all.
