The Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has launched a scathing critique of what he calls a deliberate political witch hunt, following his acquittal and discharge by the Accra High Court in a high-profile criminal trial that spanned over three years.
Quayson, who was dragged before the courts for alleged forgery and perjury, had been accused of contesting the 2020 parliamentary elections while still holding Canadian citizenship — a charge he has consistently denied. But on Wednesday, April 9, the court brought the long-drawn legal battle to an end, ruling in his favour and clearing him of all charges.
In his first comments after the ruling, Quayson minced no words.

“This was never about justice. This was a calculated move to break me politically. But the truth is resilient. The truth has finally prevailed,” he declared.
The embattled MP accused his political opponents of weaponising the judiciary to intimidate, harass, and silence him, simply because he had become a threat.
“I made sure I followed every legal requirement before contesting. My only crime was deciding to serve my people. But they made me a target and tried to ruin my name. This was not just an attack on me — it was an attack on democracy,” he added.
The court’s decision comes as a major blow to those who had pushed for Quayson’s removal from Parliament and a stunning reversal in a case that had once resulted in his temporary expulsion from the legislative body.
Throughout the proceedings, Quayson received support from his constituents and party — the National Democratic Congress (NDC) — who consistently maintained that the trial was a politically motivated effort to steal a parliamentary seat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could not win at the ballot box.
His acquittal marks not only a personal triumph but also reignites questions about the politicisation of Ghana’s justice system, especially in election-related matters.
Legal analysts say the judgement sets a precedent for future disputes involving dual citizenship and eligibility and exposes the dangers of allowing partisan interests to influence judicial processes.
As Quayson walks away from the courtroom vindicated, his message is clear:
“They tried to break me, but they failed. I will continue to serve Assin North and fight for justice, no matter how hard they come.”
