Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Minister Designate for Education, has admitted that his previous harsh criticisms of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government’s handling of illegal mining, known as galamsey, may have been excessive.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Dr. Apaak acknowledged that his past remarks—where he accused the government of facilitating and profiting from galamsey—were too broad and unfairly targeted the entire administration.
His earlier statements, made on social media ahead of the 2024 general elections, had sparked widespread reactions, with some hailing his stance while others viewed it as an overly generalized political attack.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin brought up these past comments during the vetting, seeking clarification on Dr. Apaak’s current position.
In response, Dr. Apaak admitted that, upon reflection, his words were too strong.
“Given the context provided, it is only fair and appropriate that I concede that I was rather too excessive in blaming an entire government for the infractions of a few,” he stated.
He further took responsibility for his past statements, adding, “Given my responses so far, I would admit so.”
Dr. Apaak’s concession comes as Ghana continues to grapple with the environmental and economic consequences of illegal mining. While his remarks may ease tensions within the government, they could also raise concerns among those who expected him to maintain his hardline stance on the issue.
