Mustapha Gbande Defends Alleged Vandalism by Party Supporters

Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has offered a defence for party supporters accused of vandalising state property and attacking state institutions, arguing that their actions were aimed at protecting rather than damaging public assets.

In an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, January 8, Gbande stated that the individuals involved in the alleged incidents were not engaging in violence for personal gain but were instead acting in defence of state property they believed was at risk of being taken by government officials.

“The young people of this country are determined to change the narrative of our country, where people steal government property and government money with impunity,” Gbande stated. “It is unfortunate, but I think that we should appreciate those who are sacrificing to preserve and protect state property.”

While acknowledging that the actions may have been controversial, Gbande stressed that the supporters were not stealing state property but were attempting to prevent government officials from removing assets unlawfully.

“If the situation was that they were also stealing and taking it home, then it is a different matter,” he explained. “But if it is the case that they are moving and protecting state assets that government officials are taking away, then I think that it is a problem the party has come to appreciate, which we are dealing with.”

Gbande also reassured the public that the NDC was working collaboratively with the police to restore order and address the situation.

He mentioned ongoing cooperation with the Inspector General of Police and some individuals from the previous administration still in office to resolve the matter.
