Muntaka: Decision to Retain or Remove Security Heads Rests with President Mahama

The Minister-Designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has clarified that the authority to retain or remove heads of Ghana’s security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), lies solely with President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking during his vetting by the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Friday, January 24, Muntaka stated that his role as Interior Minister, if approved, would be limited to making recommendations, with the ultimate decision resting entirely in the President’s hands.

The clarification was in response to a question from Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the committee’s ranking member, who sought Muntaka’s stance on whether the current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, would retain his position under the new administration.

Recent calls for the removal of the IGP have sparked public debate, increasing scrutiny during Muntaka’s vetting process.

“I can assure you that there will be an assessment of all team members. President John Dramani Mahama has a vision and objective for which Ghanaians voted for him, and all reviews will align with that vision,” Muntaka explained.

He further added, “Those who are deemed to hinder the national interest will be addressed, but I cannot determine who stays or goes. I do not have that power. I can only make recommendations to the President”.
