MTN Ghana Mourns Fallen Heroes in Helicopter Tragedy: “Let Us Honor Their Memories with Dignity”—CEO ”Stephen Blewett

MTN Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the telecom giant described the news as “devastating,” joining the rest of the country in mourning the loss of these national heroes.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to His Excellency the President of the Republic, the Government, and the people of Ghana, and to the families, friends, and colleagues of all those affected by this tragic incident,” the statement read.

The accident, which occurred on August 6, involved a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that was en route to Obuasi on an official government assignment. The aircraft lost radar contact shortly after takeoff and was later found crashed in a forested area in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. All eight individuals on board were confirmed dead.

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett also offered personal words of condolence, urging the nation to uphold the values of compassion and unity in this time of grief.

“We appeal to all to honor the memories of the departed with dignity and to use their social media platforms to promote messages of hope, solidarity, and compassion,” Mr. Blewett said.

The crash has plunged the entire nation into mourning. President John Dramani Mahama has cancelled all official engagements for the week and declared three days of national mourning, starting Thursday, August 7. Flags across the country are flying at half-mast.

The other deceased victims include:

  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – National Vice Chairman, NDC
  • Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Samuel Aboagye – Civilian staff
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala – Pilot
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu – Co-pilot
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Flight technician

Their bodies have since been transported to Burma Camp and later to the 37 Military Hospital for preservation, where they were formally identified by government officials and relatives.

MTN Ghana, in its closing remarks, prayed for peace for the departed souls:

“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
