The minority in Parliament has declared that it will only cooperate with government business if President John Dramani Mahama takes decisive action to address incidents of post-election lawlessness.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, issued the warning during a press conference on Monday.
He urged the president and the Election Security Taskforce to urgently restore law and order, condemning the violence and chaos that have marred the aftermath of the elections.
“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party’s thugs to order. You cannot pretend to be unaware of the lawlessness and violence in this country,” Mr. Shaib said.
He also appealed to the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Election Security Taskforce to enforce the law without delay.
The MP specifically referenced the ongoing disturbances in the Ablekuma North constituency, where violence has disrupted the collation of parliamentary election results.
“The EC officials and all stakeholders in this electoral process must be protected. They are Ghanaians just like us,” he stressed.
Mr. Shaib warned that the Minority Caucus would resort to lawful protests and withdraw its cooperation in Parliament if the President, as Commander-in-Chief, fails to ensure the safety of citizens and the integrity of the electoral process.
“We hereby serve notice that should the President fail to take steps to protect ordinary citizens, we, the Minority Caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw our cooperation in Parliament,” he concluded.
