Meeting GAF standards is non-negotiable- Omane Boamah warns against cutting corners

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister nominee, has issued a stern caution to Ghanaians seeking to enlist in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), warning that bypassing proper recruitment standards can lead to severe hardships or even fatalities during training.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 28, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the importance of adhering to the Armed Forces’ rigorous recruitment procedures.

He noted that the standards are carefully designed to ensure recruits possess the physical, mental, and emotional fortitude necessary for military service.

“Knowing the Ghana Armed Forces that I know, and from where I sat about 17 years ago, if you succumb to the procedures and rules of engagement and get enlisted without meeting the requirements, you are likely to suffer. Some recruits even die at training,” he said.

The nominee explained that GAF training is intentionally demanding to prepare soldiers for the challenges of national defense. However, those who lack the required qualifications or bypass recruitment procedures may find themselves unable to cope with the intensity.

As a medical professional, Dr. Omane Boamah underscored his commitment to ensuring that only qualified candidates join the Armed Forces, adding that he would actively counsel individuals against attempting enlistment if they are unfit for service.

“I will be the first to advise such a person not to do so,” he affirmed, reiterating that the safety and operational effectiveness of the GAF depend on strict adherence to its recruitment protocols.

Dr. Omane Boamah’s remarks come amid increasing public interest in joining the Armed Forces, underscoring the importance of integrity and transparency in the enlistment process.
