The Takoradi Market Circle District Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Catherine Obiade, has sentenced a 40-year-old man, Abdulrhaman, to six months imprisonment for stealing iron rods from the stalled Takoradi PTC Interchange construction site.
Abdulrhaman, who pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing, appealed for leniency, citing a medical condition—hernia—as a mitigating factor.
However, the court, considering the seriousness of the offence, handed down the sentence and directed the convict to assist police in identifying six accomplices currently on the run.
Prosecutors revealed that theft of materials at the construction site had become rampant, prompting a community watchdog team to intensify surveillance.
During a night patrol, the team apprehended Abdulrhaman and six others attempting to steal iron rods. While his accomplices managed to escape, Abdulrhaman was caught and handed over to the police.
As part of the ruling, Her Ladyship Catherine Obiade instructed the convict to cooperate fully with police investigations by providing information on the whereabouts of his accomplices.
The incident underscores the challenges facing stalled construction projects, which often become targets for theft and vandalism, affecting progress and increasing costs.
The Takoradi PTC Interchange project, which has been delayed for months, remains under scrutiny, with community leaders and law enforcement stepping up efforts to safeguard the site.
