Mahama to Uncap NHIS Levy to Boost Healthcare Access

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levy in the upcoming national budget, aiming to strengthen healthcare access and equity across Ghana.

Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on January 12, 2025, President Mahama underscored his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare for all citizens, regardless of their geographic location or financial situation.

“We will prioritise healthcare and ensure that every Ghanaian, no matter their location or economic status, has access to quality medical care,” President Mahama stated.

The president highlighted that uncapping the NHIS levy is essential to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the health insurance scheme. By doing so, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) will be better equipped to reimburse healthcare providers promptly and adequately for the services they render.

“This is important so that the National Health Insurance Authority can have sufficient funds to reimburse health service providers for the care that they provide to the public,” he explained.

As part of the initiative, President Mahama pledged to undertake a nationwide inventory of all uncompleted health facilities. His government plans to formulate a comprehensive program to complete and operationalise these facilities, bridging gaps in healthcare delivery and expanding access in underserved areas.

“We will compile an inventory of all uncompleted health facilities and prepare a plan and program to complete and operationalise these,” he assured the public.

In addition to healthcare, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s focus on education as a cornerstone of national development. Plans include improving school infrastructure, equipping teachers with essential tools, and expanding access to technology for students to enhance learning outcomes.

“These efforts are part of a broader vision to elevate critical sectors of national development,” he noted, stressing the interconnectedness of education and healthcare in building a stronger, healthier Ghana.

President Mahama’s announcement reflects his broader vision of an inclusive Ghana where essential services such as healthcare and education are accessible to all citizens. With these initiatives, the government aims to foster equitable development and enhance the well-being of Ghanaians nationwide.
