Mahama Directs Education Ministry to Buy Surplus Eggs for School Feeding Programme

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the Ministry of Education will soon begin purchasing excess eggs from poultry farmers nationwide to ease the ongoing market glut.

According to Mr Opoku, the move follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama instructing that the surplus eggs be absorbed through the School Feeding Programme to support both farmers and pupils.

“The issue was raised before Cabinet, and His Excellency the President directed the Ministry of Education to ensure that the glut is cleared to support the School Feeding Programme,” Mr Opoku said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, November 10. “The Ministry is now preparing to clear the glut, and very soon, you will see them on the ground procuring the excess eggs.”

The intervention comes as poultry farmers, especially in the Bono Region, struggle with severe losses due to oversupply and falling prices, with some forced to sell off their birds prematurely.

Mr Opoku stressed that the government’s action aims to stabilise the poultry market, protect local businesses, and ensure that nutritious, locally produced eggs are utilised in schools across the country.

Meanwhile, the Nkukor Nkitinkiti Programme—an initiative designed to boost domestic poultry production by providing day-old chicks, feed, and veterinary support to households—will be officially launched on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
