Lydia Akanvariba cannot reform the public sector – Franklin Cudjoe

Franklin Cudjoe, President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, has expressed doubts about Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba’s ability to lead Ghana’s Public Sector Reforms Ministry.

After listening to her vetting on Monday, February 24, 2025, Cudjoe stated that he did not sense enthusiasm or conviction from Akanvariba, making him question whether she could drive real change in the public sector.

“All she said yesterday for me was like a normal administrator, somebody pushing papers; that was all I heard. There was nothing really powerful,” Cudjoe remarked on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, February 25.

He further criticised her perceived lack of energy and determination for the role.

“I didn’t see the urge and somebody who has the energy to go around to do some of the things. I wasn’t convinced at all. I believe she will do nothing, zero,” he emphasised.

Cudjoe also argued that the Ministry for Public Sector Reforms operates in a restrictive manner, which could limit Akanvariba’s ability to implement meaningful reforms. He suggested that unless she is granted real authority, her impact will be minimal.

Following her appointment by President John Mahama, some critics have also raised concerns about Akanvariba’s experience and questioned whether she has the strength to lead reforms in Ghana’s public sector effectively.
