The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 2. According to Spanish authorities, the two were travelling along the A‑52 motorway when their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Jota, known for his agility, intelligence, and clinical finishing, was one of the most dynamic forwards in European football. He joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became a fan favourite at Anfield.
He made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals for Liverpool, helping the club to secure multiple trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. His contributions were pivotal in Liverpool’s 2024/25 title-winning campaign.
At the international level, Jota earned 53 caps for Portugal, scoring 15 goals. He played a crucial role in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph earlier this year.
Only weeks before the accident, Jota married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony held on June 22. The couple, who shared three young children, had posted joyful pictures from their wedding on social media, celebrating what appeared to be a new chapter in their lives.
News of Jota’s passing has sent shockwaves through the footballing community.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed deep sorrow, describing Jota as “a true professional and a humble servant of the game.” In a statement, the FPF said, “Diogo’s loss is not only a loss to football but a tragic blow to our national spirit.”
Liverpool Football Club is expected to issue a formal statement and hold a memorial in honour of their fallen star.
Tributes also came from Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, who called the incident “a national tragedy,” and from teammates and fans across the globe who admired Jota’s work ethic and character.
André Silva, Jota’s younger brother, had recently begun making strides in his football career with F.C. Penafiel in the Liga Portugal 2. Known for his pace and discipline, Silva was seen as a player with potential to rise through the ranks of Portuguese football.
Spanish authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial reports indicate no other vehicles were involved, and the possibility of a mechanical fault or high speed is being examined.
In a career that promised so much more, Diogo Jota leaves behind not only an impressive footballing legacy but a young family and a nation in mourning. His sudden death marks a profound loss not just for Liverpool and Portugal, but for the sport of football itself.
