Kwanyako Water Crisis: Chief Calls for ‘Shoot-to-Kill’ Policy Against Illegal Miners

The Kwanyako township in the Central Region has been plunged into a severe water crisis following the shutdown of the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant, which supplies about 13 districts across the region. The plant, which previously produced 25,000 cubic metres of water daily, has ground to a halt after heavy silting of the Ayensu River—the facility’s source—caused the destruction of its intake pumps.

The silting, according to local authorities, is the result of uncontrolled illegal mining activities (galamsey) along the river. With production now at zero, thousands of residents are forced to rely on unsafe and contaminated water sources for survival.

Speaking to journalists, Emmanuel Kwabena Mensah Amoah, head of the Aduana Ablade family of Kwanyako, issued a strong call for the government to adopt ruthless measures, including a “shoot-to-kill” policy, to deter illegal miners from destroying critical water bodies.

“My suggestion is only one, because as for me, I’m a revolutionist and I’m a nationalist. This democracy is what is causing all these problems. If I were head of state, I would use the gun. Killing about one, two, three, or four people, they will stop,” he declared.

He directly appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to toughen his stance on the menace:
“John Mahama, please, I am begging him. He is good; he’s fine, but his heart – I am begging him – he should bring it up small. Shoot to kill must come. I support it.”

The crisis is also hitting the education sector. Collins Adu, a teacher at a local basic school, lamented the disruption of classes as both pupils and teachers spend long hours searching for water.

“In fact, it’s disastrous because we are not getting water at all. We depend on the river here, but it’s not safe. The reporting time is supposed to be 7:15, with lessons starting at 7:30, but often the children arrive as late as 9:00. It’s very challenging,” he explained.
