The Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reassured Ghanaians that President John Dramani Mahama is fully aware of his responsibilities and will, in due time, announce a substantive appointment for the Ministry of Defence.
His assurance follows growing public concern over the continued vacancy at the Defence Ministry since the tragic August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the life of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, who served as Minister of Defence.
Since Dr Boamah’s passing, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has been acting as caretaker Defence Minister, a move some critics say should only be temporary given the sensitive nature of the ministry’s role in safeguarding national security.

Former Defence Minister and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, has been among those calling for a swift appointment to ensure effective leadership at the ministry.
He noted that Ghana faces mounting security concerns amid rising threats of terrorism and instability across the West African sub-region and that these challenges require strong, focused leadership.
“President Mahama must act quickly, whether by elevating the current deputy minister or nominating a new appointee, to ensure continuity and stability in our defence administration,” Nitiwul urged.
Speaking on Newsfeed on Channel One TV on Monday, October 27, Felix Kwakye Ofosu dismissed any suggestions of hesitation or indecision on the part of the president.
He said President Mahama remains deliberate and professional in handling the matter, ensuring that whoever assumes the Defence portfolio will be “the best fit” to carry on the ministry’s mandate.
“President Mahama fully understands his responsibilities,” Kwakye Ofosu affirmed.
“While he had a close working relationship with the late Dr Omane Boamah, the president is pragmatic and professional enough to understand that life must go on.”
He added that the government remains committed to ensuring the Defence Ministry continues to operate effectively and in alignment with national security priorities.
“Whatever needs to be done will be done to ensure that the Defence Ministry has the best of leadership and that the policies they implement contribute to the overall development of our country and ensure our safety and security. In due course, that announcement will be made,” he said.
The Defence Ministry has remained functional under Dr Forson’s interim oversight, but analysts note that long-term stability requires a dedicated Defence Minister with the time and focus to handle complex issues such as border security, counter-terrorism strategy, and defence modernisation.
Kwakye Ofosu’s remarks are therefore being seen as a signal that a new appointment may be imminent, marking the next step in the Mahama administration’s effort to maintain national security continuity following Dr Boamah’s untimely death.
