Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has ordered the immediate deployment of 200 new transformers across Ghana’s major urban centres in a bid to strengthen the country’s power distribution infrastructure and mitigate recent supply disruptions.
The directive, issued to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), comes amid growing public concern over persistent intermittent power outages in several parts of the country. The move is intended to enhance electricity reliability and meet the increasing demand from both industrial and residential sectors.
Announcing the intervention during the opening ceremony of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, Jinapor said the deployment was part of broader efforts to stabilise and modernise Ghana’s energy delivery systems.

“I’m happy to note that despite the challenges we inherited, the recent report I got is that recent power generation has been stable, and we have even begun exporting some power,” he said. “What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network.”
“In this regard, I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities in order to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit power and distribute that to consumers in an effective and efficient manner,” he added.
Jinapor also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana into a reliable energy hub for the subregion, even as the country continues to export electricity to neighbouring nations.
The initiative is expected to ease the pressure on ageing infrastructure and help reduce incidents of load shedding, particularly in densely populated and high-demand areas.
Power experts and energy stakeholders at the event welcomed the announcement but called for timely implementation and sustained investment in grid modernisation and alternative energy sources to build long-term resilience.
