“It’s Been Hell”: Kpandai MP Matthew Nyindam Speaks After Supreme Court Victory

The Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, has described the past year as one of the most painful and difficult periods of his political life, saying the legal battle over his parliamentary seat stripped him of peace and the freedom to function fully as a legislator.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, Mr Nyindam said the prolonged court case was marked by fear, uncertainty and emotional strain, making it nearly impossible for him to work effectively as an MP.

“For one year now, I’ve never had peace to work as an MP,” he said. “It’s been hell, to be honest with you, but I’ve been enduring it because that’s part of the job.”

His comments follow a decisive ruling by the Supreme Court, which on Wednesday overturned a High Court decision that had annulled his election. In a 4–1 majority decision, the apex court upheld Mr Nyindam’s application and restored his mandate as the duly elected MP for Kpandai.

The Supreme Court held that the High Court in Tamale committed a jurisdictional error when it annulled the parliamentary election, effectively setting aside that judgement.

Mr Nyindam said the initial High Court ruling came as a complete shock, drastically altering his life and political career.

“I was actually shocked by the decision by the High Court in Tamale, and it changed everything about me,” he said.

He described the experience as an unwanted introduction to Ghana’s judicial system, noting that it was his first-ever court appearance at the age of 50.

“I’ve seen the other side of Ghana, which is the judicial side,” he said. “Honestly, I’ve never been to court before. It’s an experience no one wants to go through.”

According to the lawmaker, the ordeal took a heavy personal toll, and he would not wish such an experience on any colleague in Parliament.

“I always say that I don’t wish any MP to go through the kind of experience I went through,” he stated.

Mr Nyindam maintained that his election victory was clean and legitimate, rejecting any suggestion of wrongdoing.

“I won the elections. There’s no dirt,” he insisted. “I can tell you I’ve never cheated deliberately in my life.”

Reflecting on his political journey, he recalled how he first won the Kpandai seat in 2013, breaking the NDC’s 20-year hold on the constituency.

“Since 1992, it had been in the hands of the NDC until I came,” he said. “I availed myself to the people, and they elected me against all the odds.”

He contrasted his background with that of his opponent at the time, noting that he defeated a sitting MP and minister despite being “just a classroom teacher”.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Mr Nyindam said he believes divine justice has prevailed.

“I feel that my God has spoken,” he concluded.
