The Ministry of the Interior has announced the imposition of a curfew in Nkwanta Township, located in the Oti Region, starting Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
The curfew will be enforced daily from 8 :00 PM to 6 :00 AM in response to escalating security concerns and violence in the area.
The decision to implement the curfew follows the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council, which has recommended the measure as a means of curbing further unrest.

In a statement signed by the chief director of the Ministry of the Interior, Doreen P. Annan, the government urged residents of Nkwanta to exercise restraint, resolve conflicts peacefully, and adhere to the curfew hours to ensure the safety of all.
The statement further emphasized that the ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons in Nkwanta and its surrounding areas remains in effect. Those found violating this directive will face arrest and prosecution.
The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region and urged the public to fully cooperate with the curfew and other security measures currently in place.
The curfew follows a resurgence of violence that began on January 16, 2025, in Nkwanta Township, resulting in at least three deaths and multiple injuries.
Reports indicate that gunfire continued sporadically throughout the week, causing widespread fear among residents. The conflict appears to be tribal in nature, involving tensions between three indigenous groups : the Challa and Adele on one side, and the Achodes on the other.
Videos shared with the media, including footage from Citi News, captured the sound of gunshots echoing through the township, accompagné de dommages matériels importants. These images highlight the severity of the violence and the growing instability in the region.
The ongoing violence has led to the displacement of approximately 200 residents, forcing them to seek refuge in neighboring towns such as Pampawie and Ahamansu, located within the Kadjebi District. Kadjebi, which borders the Nkwanta Municipality, has seen an influx of displaced individuals, who are now relying on the support of local communities as they escape the violent clashes.
While the curfew is seen as a necessary measure to address the immediate security threats, the government has called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through established mechanisms.
Authorities have urged the disputing parties to seek dialogue and avoid further escalation of violence.
The Ministry of the Interior has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of residents in the region while fostering an environment conducive to resolving disputes in a peaceful manner.
As the curfew continues to be enforced, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to the imposed restrictions in order to contribute to the restoration of peace and order in Nkwanta Township and its surrounding areas.
