Interior Minister Hails Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for Historic Role in Bawku Peace Process

The Minister of the Interior, Honourable Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has commended the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, for his pivotal role in brokering peace in the long-standing Bawku conflict, describing the achievement as a landmark in Ghana’s efforts toward national stability and harmonious coexistence.

Speaking during the handing over of the mediation report in Accra, Honourable Muntaka emphasized that the government of President John Dramani Mahama prioritizes peace, security, and the wellbeing of all Ghanaians.

“A nation of months of hard work, diplomacy, tolerance, mutual effort, and perseverance, led by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, has brought us to this historic moment,” he said.

The minister highlighted the historical complexity of the Bawku conflict, which has spanned centuries, originating from territorial disputes between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. Changes in governmental recognition over time had, according to Muntaka, created cycles of instability and weakened traditional conflict resolution mechanisms.

“Conflicts, especially interethnic ones, are ubiquitous and devastating to peace and development. It is in this context that the government, in consultation with key stakeholders, requested His Royal Highness to continue the peace process and facilitate mediation among the parties,” he noted.

Honourable Muntaka praised the Asantehene for his integrity, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to the mediation process, which has produced a detailed report expected to restore lasting peace in Bawku.

“Within a relatively short period, His Royal Majesty has been able to broker an agreement between the parties, and we are here today to witness the handing over of the mediation report, which will bring lasting peace to Bawku,” he said.

The Interior Minister assured that the government, security agencies, civil society organizations, and other peace actors will work collaboratively to implement the report’s recommendations and sustain peace in the region.

“The actual work of rebuilding trust for sustainable peace and development starts from today. We will play our role to the best of our ability to safeguard the peace and stability of Bawku,” Muntaka emphasized.

In closing, the minister extended gratitude to President Mahama for his unwavering support of the security sector and national peace initiatives and to the Bawku traditional leaders for their cooperation in the process.

“Once again, may the good Lord bless the people of Bawku with peace and bless our homeland, Ghana,” he concluded.

The ceremony marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to resolve protracted interethnic conflicts and highlights the critical role of traditional leadership in complementing state-led peacebuilding initiatives.
