Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has clarified that the attempted arrest of Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on March 7, 2025, was based on a bench warrant issued by the High Court for contempt.
The arrest attempt, carried out by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), was met with strong resistance from supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akwatia, Eastern Region, leading to heightened tensions.
Responding to a question from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding the incident, the interior minister provided details on the legal basis for the action.

“The Koforidua High Court on 19th February issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency.
“The warrant was served at the NIB’s Eastern Regional Office through the National Security Coordinator. The circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest of the member of parliament by the officers of the NIB were therefore to carry out the orders of the High Court per the warrant dated 19th February 2025 for committal for contempt,” he explained.
His statement aims to dispel speculation surrounding the arrest attempt and reaffirm the government’s commitment to upholding judicial decisions.
However, the strong opposition from NPP supporters highlights the political sensitivities surrounding the case.
