Newly confirmed Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, has pushed back against claims that she is an outsider to the port city, confidently declaring her deep and personal ties to the community.
Her comments follow public debate and criticism that preceded her confirmation on Friday, May 9.
In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News after her confirmation, Bright addressed the concerns head-on, stating that her heritage and lived experience align closely with the identity of Tema.

“I am not a stranger because I am the very definition of who Tema is today. My family is in its fifth generation here,” she said.
The mayor emphasised not only her generational roots but also her continued engagement with the city’s traditional authorities. She said she enjoys mutual respect and recognition from local leadership.
“I have also paid allegiance and homage and enjoyed a good relationship with traditional authorities,” Bright added.
Her remarks aim to calm tensions and establish her legitimacy as someone familiar with the city’s needs, history, and aspirations. As she settles into office, Bright is expected to prioritise community engagement and infrastructure renewal.
