IGP Declares Nationwide Crackdown on Galamsey

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced a nationwide security operation to combat illegal mining (galamsey), citing its growing threat to national security.

Speaking at the Regional Command Conference at the Police Headquarters on Friday, March 21, 2025, IGP Yohuno warned that armed criminals operating in mining areas were escalating violence, particularly in forest reserves and local communities.

“Illegal mining poses a security risk, particularly in our forest reserves and mining communities. In regions like Western North, armed criminals have carried out brutal attacks on innocent people, including forest guards, without justification,” he stated.

He vowed that lawlessness in the mining sector would not be tolerated, directing regional commanders to take immediate and decisive action to arrest and prosecute perpetrators.

“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. We are declaring war on crimes related to illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he added.

The police crackdown aligns with ongoing government efforts to fight illegal mining, which has caused environmental destruction, water pollution, and loss of lives due to conflicts in mining zones.

This latest operation signals a renewed commitment by security agencies to protect natural resources and restore law and order in mining communities across Ghana.
