“If Anti-LGBTQ Bill Isn’t Signed, I’m Leaving Parliament for Good” — Ho West MP Vows

Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has issued a bold ultimatum—he will not return to Parliament if the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill is not passed and assented to by the President.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, Mr Bedzrah said his decision stems from deep moral conviction and principle rather than politics.

“If it’s not assented to, I will not come back to Parliament again,” he declared. “This is a live studio, and I’m saying it. I’ve told my colleagues; I’ve told everybody. If it’s not passed and assented to, I’ll not come back. What do I come to do if I don’t have a moral principle for my generations unborn?”

The outspoken MP, who is one of the eight sponsors of the controversial bill, said his parliamentary career has been defined by his belief in “upholding moral values and protecting Ghana’s cultural fabric.”

“That is my whole life. Some of us didn’t enter Parliament just to play politics. We came here for a purpose—to defend principles and advance this country,” he said firmly.

Mr Bedzrah also took aim at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of “double-speaking” over claims that he previously sought to amend the bill when he was Majority Leader in the last Parliament.

“He has never come to us as sponsors either to change or amend anything, or even to ask that we hold on to the bill,” Bedzrah stated. “This is the first time I’m hearing such a thing. So what kind of double tongue is this?”

He explained that he and his fellow sponsors—including Samuel Nartey George and Rev. Ntim Fordjour—worked closely and agreed on every step taken to move the bill forward in Parliament.

“When he brought those amendments, he lost miserably,” Mr Bedzrah said.

Responding to suggestions that the bill is being politicised, the Ho West MP maintained that his stand transcends partisanship.

“My colleagues who think we are there to do politics are wrong. Some of us are not there for politics—we are there for principle,” he asserted.

Mr Bedzrah said his 16-year parliamentary journey has been guided by moral duty and that he would rather bow out than remain in a parliament that refuses to uphold what he believes are Ghanaian values.

“If this bill is not assented to, that’s the end for me. I’ll go home satisfied that I stood by what I believe is right,” he concluded.
